People - The Real Church
Often when someone says church, we think of the nearest grand old building, but church is really about the people who meet there and their lives.
So who goes to Westbourne Grove Church? The church is a small group of 30-40 people of a surprisingly wide range of ages and types. The church has a tradition of being welcoming, open, honest, and this is attractive to anyone who wants to build relationships and participate in a group that is not so large that you can be overlooked or forgotten.
Are churchgoers slightly alien people with tentacles like the page icon? Well odd people can turn up anywhere, and churches certainly have a few, but most people who go to this church are ordinary folk who have jobs, families, friends, enjoy parties, watching TV, going to films, and having a meal together. The number of special interests of church members is enormous, including sailing, cycling, inline skating, sculpture, painting, photography, needlework, hillwalking, playing and recording music, fencing, rocket science and many more.
Due to our closeness to Kensington students from Imperial College and the Royal College of Art often attend Westbourne Grove Church, and Chris visits the students Christian group to speak from time to time. We are fortunate to have 4 graduates of these colleges who have stayed on in London. Nursing and teaching staff have also been well represented. Other members have been students at The Guitar Institute and Drumtech in Acton. Another is a professional piano tuner.
People who grew up in England and others who have come from elsewhere have mixed happily since long before Notting Hill’s troubles in the seventies. Despite the present small congregation there are still members present who were born and grew up in each of the five continents !
