Paper Glass Clay

"The work in this exhibition is in hot fused glass and I'm very excited to share it.

It's all about number, inspired by nature and the landscape.

Mezin Bracelets. The geometric key and herringbone patterns here are taken from two bracelets found at an archeological site at Mezin, Ukraine. I am delighted to bring these exquisite designs into the light again.

They have been cast over moulds carved with the design and then fused to a back- plate which was fired first with glass frit. The glass frit gives sparkle and grittiness for the glossy design to stand out against. The original bracelets were carved in mammoth tusk and are the oldest carved adornments and mark making on worn objects ever found and known to have been made by humankind. They were discovered in the hearth of a building made of mammoth tusks. They would have been worn by a woman, the hearth-keeper, performer of ritual and keeper of the flame. They are 40,000 years old and are believed to be solar and lunar calendars, with every mark representative of a day.

My fascination with ancient civilization and culture and my discovery of these bracelets led me into the study of pattern and number.

This helped me start to understand the connection we have to nature, the land and the hidden patterns and laws in nature and pushed me further into a deeper inquiry of symbolic number and sacred geometry

I feel inspired to produce both geometric and illustrative works reflective of the landscape and our connection to it.”
