Blue Horizons

Meg Wroe

“The paintings in this exhibition are inspired by an annual trip I make to the

beautiful Scottish Island of Iona, where the sea and sky meet blue on blue. It

is an ancient place of pilgrimage with the Iona Abbey, home of the Iona

Community, at its centre. The island is tiny, but the deep blues and greens of

the Atlantic Ocean, never fail to surprise me. I paint in watercolours on Iona,

sitting on a rock with my back to the wind, then back in my London studio

using oil or acrylic, I paint on canvas or wood.

I want to show a sense of wonder in the midst of the ordinary. Transformation

is possible on the streets of London as much as the Isle of Iona, the way

rooftops glow in the evening sun – it is to do with noticing.

I graduated from Central St Martin’s University of the Arts London, in 2006,

and have exhibited in solo and group shows. I have delivered art workshops

in South Africa, Bethlehem and Brazil, making my own work around these

experiences.”
