Richard Fletcher
Richard Fletcher, 65, is a self-taught artist currently living in London, where he has spent over nine years navigating semi-homelessness. His experiences include rough sleeping in more than a dozen British cities, as well as in Perpignan, France, and around Los Angeles. Life has often been a struggle, shaped by his naturally restless spirit, but his enduring creative drive has remained a constant source of strength and solace.
Richard has always drawn, painted, doodled, and written, developing his practice outside of formal education. Though he was offered the opportunity to attend art school, he chose to follow his own path, knowing that a structured syllabus did not suit his temperament. As a result, his artistic development has been entirely self-directed, evolving organically over the years.
His work resists thematic boundaries, embracing whatever subject inspires him in the moment — from landscapes and portraits to abstracts, nudes, and animals. He has completed numerous commissions and particularly enjoys working in the meticulous and meditative style of pointillism, which helps him stay focused and grounded. His creative process often takes place in public spaces like train stations, libraries, and parks, as well as in some of the hostels where he stays. Many of his abstract works are derived from sketches he made more than 50 years ago.
Though he also paints well in oils, the lack of a permanent studio makes this medium less practical. Nevertheless, Richard continues to create with remarkable resilience, producing art that is as diverse and compelling as his life journey.
